KENAI PENINSULA STERLING HIGHWAY STERLING HIGHWAY begins at the junction with the Seward Highway, 90 miles south of Anchorage. Mileposts along the highway, used below, reflect the distance from Seward. Business use these numbers as addresses. For approximate distance to Anchorage, add 53. For distance to the end of the road at Homer, subtract the milepost number from 180. The Sterling Highway heads due west from the junction and passes through Cooper Landing. Expect dense traffic from Cooper Landing to the Kenai River ferry landing whenever salmon are running, and packed campgrounds are the norm. Once free of this bottleneck, the highway leaves the mountains and continues on to Soldotna through glacial hills and sparse forests. At Soldotna, the Kenai Spur Highway turns north at the "Y" for that city and Captain Cook State Park. The highway bears south after Soldotna and parallels the coast from Clam Gulch to Homer. On clear days, the view of the volcanos across Cook Inlet is spectacular, and people along the road claim that their sunsets are the best in the world. Besides fishing, many visitors comb the beaches for tasty clams. Homer is notable tor two reasons: First, it is the very end of the connected North American highway system. Second, the halibut fishing is great. The view across the bay of mountains and glaciers is fantastic, and there are several very reasonably priced cruises to bird nesting areas and tidal pool nature areas. Others choose to shop at the unique boardwalks along the spit. Ferry and shuttle connections for Seldovia, and ferry to Seward, Valdez, and Kodiak. Mile 37: Junction with Seward Highway. Seward is 37 miles south; Anchorage 90 miles north. Mile 45: Quartz Creek and Crescent Lake USFS Campgrounds Mile 45: Sunrise Inn 595-1222 Partial hookups, dry sites, tents, rooms, restaurant, gas, guided fishing and tours, info. Mile 47.4: Kenai Princess Lodge and RV Park 595-1425 Full and partial hookups, showers, laundry, sanidump, Princess Lodge nearby, tours. The Cooper Landing area is the last stretch of the Sterling Highway to be improved. Construction has stalled due to fighting over the new right-of-way. Locals prefer to have the existing road through town widened, which will not solve the traffic problems but will improve business. The state proposes routes near the mountains north or south. Environmentalists oppose the north route because it will impact on part of the Ressurection Pass Trail. Construction could start at any time, so be alert. Mile 48.5: HAMILTON'S PLACE 595-1260
