KENAI PENINSULA SEWARD HIGHWAY The SEWARD HIGHWAY starts at the intersection of 10th Ave. And Gambell St. in Anchorage. The highway has been designated a National Scenic Byway, with good reason. After circling around Turnagain Arm, the road crosses Turnagain Pass and continues through the Kenai Mountains to Seward. Note that the stretch from Anchorage to around Girdwood (mile 90) is very dangerous because of heavy traffic. Be especially cautious of unexpected turns by vehicles entering turnouts, and groups of parked vehicles along the road watching Dall sheep or bore tides and belugas. (Get a tide schedule at the Portage Glacier Visitor Center.) Anglers cross the road at Bird Creek. Moose are also a problem on the Peninsula. A new section of road opened along the Arm in 1998. There are many new turnouts and a bike trail. Try to stop at viewpoints on the way south to avoid crossing traffic. Construction seems to have been completed in the pass area, where a major project straightened the road and eliminated several bridges. A bypass is planned for the Cooper Landing area; routes are being studied. Near Soldotna, Funny River Road, along the south side of the Kenai River, has been paved, but it still has some sharp curves. Drive with your headlights on at all time on the Kenal Peninsula. Rest areas on the Kenai Peninsula are posted "no overnight parking or camping." Campgrounds identified by BOLD CAPITALS have paid to advertise on this site and in our book and maps. Please visit them, and tell them you heard about their business from KARO Enterprises.
