In 2002 RV Times Magazine asked us to prepare a list of helpful web sites for an issue devoted to the trip to and through Alaska. Since we do our surfing with the Dodge, not the mouse, we polled about three dozen of our latest book/map customers, all people planning to make their first trip to Alaska, to see what sites were most helpful to travelers planning a trip from scratch. The group was asked to nominate sites in five catagories: General Information, Alaska, Yukon/NWT, British Columbia, and special interests. A common complaint was that there were few sites that provided a big picture of the entire trip, but many that deal with narrow areas of interest. And, surprisingly, only a few sites were mentioned more than once. Here are the most popular sites, not ranked in any particular order. If you want to nominate a site, feel free.

The KARO website is a directory of every private and government RV park and camground in Northern British Columbia and the Yukon. It is also the only place to order the guidebook and directory PRACTICAL LAND-YACHT NAVIGATOR. KARO maps are available from the publisher or at about forty retailers along the northern routes. Information is based on ten trips to and through Alaska since 1992 and annual visits with about 380 RV/campground operators.
NEWS GROUPS: You may want to open a dialog and compare notes with someone else planning a trip. We have found little of value by simply checking the rec:RV and rec:camping news groups. A better approach is to go to www.google.com and then click on groups and rec: Use the window to search for a specific topic, ie. Alaska Highway, and be sure to search all groups. Put returns in chronological order and scan down to find those that sound interesting. To reply to the group you'll have to register your E-mail address and select a password. Also register to post on www.alcanseek.com. We have found this group to be much better focused on travel and not prone to wander into topics like politics and religion.
