HAINES HIGHWAY
AND HAINES, ALASKA
The 151 miles of scenic grandeur from Haines Junction, YT, to Haines, Alaska, is probably the most beautiful mountain drive anywhere. The road is all paved with no construction problems. There are also few services, so plan ahead. The customs stations close at night. Remember that Haines time is an hour earlier than Canada. Many travelers choose to visit Haines by driving to Skagway, then continuing on to Haines via water taxi or ferry. The drive to Skagway is also striking, but completely different from the Haines Highway. Both routes should be covered. Try to drive it on a clear day, and repeat as often as possible in different months and times of day. It never grows old! you'll find an excellent road all the way to Haines. Remember to use the many designated areas to pull off as you pass through the Bald Eagle Preserve.
Haines is a ferry port for Southeast Alaska. Passage to Skagway is available via ferry, water taxi, or day boat. A new day-trip tour boat is now operating from Haines and Skagway to Juneau: Fjordlands Express. Office is at small boat harbor. A new state ferry, the high-speed catamaran MV Fairweather, entered service in 2004 making daily trips from Juneau-Skagway-Juneau-Haines-Juneau. There is also a private cabin-over catamaran for transporting vehicles and equipment to Auk Bay. For ferry details, visit the Marine Highway page. In Juneau: Spruce Meadow RV Park. Full hookups, 3.7 miles from ferry terminal on Loop Rd. (907) 789-1990
