ALASKA
HIGHWAY IN THE YUKON: YUKON RV PARKS AND CAMPGROUNDS See the Yukon Page for an overview of routes.
Watson Lake is famous for its Signpost Forest, started by an Illinois soldier in 1942 and now totaling about 60,000 signs. Bring your own, or make one at the Visitors Centre. The Centre also has an interesting highway construction exhibit. Right across the street from the Signpost Forest is the Northern Lights Centre, a planetarium dedicated to the northern lights phenomena. Admission charged.
The Alaska Highway continues following rivers west of Watson Lake. Twelve miles west is the junction with the Cassiar Highway, a must-see alternative for returning to Prince George via the Cassiar/Yellowhead route. Stop and take the short walk to the Rancheria Falls. The divide at Historical Mile 721 separates the Mackenzie and Yukon river systems, and all rivers west of the divide flow to the Pacific Ocean. Interesting attractions along the way include the museum and lake at Teslin, a side trip to Atlin, the gold rush heritage of Skagway and the White Pass Route, Whitehorse, the Klondike Highway to Dawson City, the Haines Highway, Kluane Lake with the adjacent National Park, and the long stretch of wilderness leading to the Alaska border. The last 100 mile stretch of highway in Canada is subject to damage from frost heaving. Expect construction close to Kluane Lake. Some new sections are already deteriorating. Always stop at the Visitors Centre in Whitehorse to ask about road conditions, forest fire activity, and service availability along the Alaska Highway and Klondike Loop routes. NOTE: This list uses Historical Miles, which vary from "actual miles" due to over fifty years of straightening and rerouting. The deviation at Watson Lake, YT, is about 22 miles (Historical Mile 635 vs. Actual Mile 613). Posts along the road are marked in kilometers. One kilometer equals .6 miles. The BC/YT border is crossed seven times, beginning at mile 589. The official border is at mile 627. The final crossing is at mile 776 (Morley River). Remember, in Canada it is illegal to camp or park overnight in rest areas or turnouts unless otherwise posted. Many campgrounds, identified with BOLD CAPITALS, have purchased advertising on this site. Their support makes this site, and our annual 15,000 mile trip, possible. Please use their services, and be sure to mention that you saw their KARO Enterprises web site ad. Drive with your headlights on at all times. To use a government campsite you must purchase a permit before going to the site, and deposit it in the box when you self-register. Permits are available at private RV parks, businesses, visitor centres, and government offices. Fee was raised from $8 to $12 in 2002 (CN$).
